This article explains the ins and outs of using MURAL on your Android device.

MURAL is available for Android phones and tablets. Depending on which device you use MURAL on, the app may appear slightly different but works the same.

Install MURAL for Android

Visit the Google Play Store on your Android device to install MURAL for Android.

  1. From the Google Play Store, search for MURAL.

  2. Tap Install (MURAL is free to download, but you will need an account to log in!).

  3. Confirm the installation with your device to finish installing.


Open or create a mural

When you launch MURAL, you're taken to the dashboard. From here, you can browse existing murals and filter by last updated or last created — or switch workspaces or rooms to find the mural you're looking for.

To open a mural from a link:

  1. Simply tap the link to visit the mural in the MURAL app. Android asks "Open this page in 'MURAL'?".

  2. Tap Open. (If you don't have the app, you can tap the get it from the Google Play Store link.)

To create a new mural:

  1. From the dashboard, tap the All Murals view in the top left of the screen. A menu appears with All murals, Recently opened, and Favorite murals.

  2. Tap Create mural.

  3. Type a name for your new mural and select a room for it to live in.

  4. Tap Create.


Get started with MURAL on your Android device

We're sure that you'll find MURAL on a smaller screen very intuitive! Nonetheless, here are some tips for performing common actions in a mural to help you quickly get started.

Change mural settings

To change mural settings:

  1. Android Phone: Tap the three-dot menu icon ( ) in the top right of the screen and select Mural settings.
    Android tablet: Tap the name of the mural.

  2. From here, you can:

    • Change the mural name.

    • Choose a background color.

    • Choose a different mural size.

Zoom and pan

  • To zoom in and out, pinch with your fingers.

  • To pan, slide one finger around the canvas.

Add objects

  • To add a sticky note:

    • Android phone: Tap the sticky note icon on the left toolbar. Or, double-tap on the canvas.

    • Android tablet: Tap the text icon on the left toolbar. Or, double-tap on the canvas.

  • To add other objects:

    • Android phone: Tap the plus icon on the left toolbar.

    • Android tablet: Tap the specific object icon on the left toolbar.

Change and arrange objects

On an Android phone, additional options for objects appear at the bottom of the screen. On an Android tablet, they appear above the selected object.

  • To edit text, double-tap on any object that contains text.

  • To change styles, tap once on an object to select it, then choose a style option.

  • To add or remove a border, tap once on an object to select it, then tap the border (square) icon.

  • To add a link, tap once on an object to select it, then tap the link icon and paste or type in the link.

  • To change object types, tap once on an object to select it, then tap the change object icon (box with arrows). Note: This only works for sticky notes, text objects, or shapes.

  • To move an object, hold your finger on the object and drag it around.

  • To resize an object, tap it once to show the selection handles, then drag the handles to resize.

  • To paste content, tap once on the mural and select paste.

  • To select multiple objects, tap and hold on the canvas, then drag across the objects.

Images and photos have extra options when you select them.

  • To crop an image object, tap it once to select it, then tap the crop icon.

  • To toggle an image description, tap once on an image object to select it, then tap the caption (text) icon.

Do even more with objects

There are lots of options available for each object. To save space, we've tucked them away into a context menu.

How to show the context menu:

  1. Tap once on the object to select it. The three-dot menu icon ( ) appears in the top right of the object.

  2. Tap the three-dot menu icon ( ) to show more options.

  3. From here, you can:

    • Add a comment.

    • Duplicate the object.

    • Lock (or unlock) the object.

    • Bring the object to the front or send it to the back.

    • Delete the object.

    • Copy the object.

    • Get a link to the object.

    • Copy a sticky note style.

    • Edit the caption or description (for image objects).

    • Show more info (who added or edited the object).

Draw with your finger

  • To enter draw mode, tap the pencil icon in the left toolbar.

  • Use one finger to draw on the canvas, and two fingers to move around.

  • While in draw mode, tap the icons at the bottom (Android phone) or left side of the screen (Android tablet) to:

    • Change pen tip types.

    • Switch to the eraser.

    • Change your ink color.

  • To exit draw mode, tap Done in the top right of the screen. All drawn lines become a single resizable object.

Invite collaborators

  • To open the share screen, tap the pink share button in the top right.

  • From the share screen, you can:

    • Invite Members and guests or Visitors.

    • Copy the link.

    • Reset the link to remove access to the original link.

    • Export your mural as a PDF, PNG, or ZIP.

    • Share the link using a specific app on your device.

Add, view, and reply to comments

Comments on mobile are just as easy as in the web app.

  • To add a comment on the canvas, tap on the canvas and select Add comment.

  • To add a comment to an object, tap on the object, then choose Add comment from its context menu.

  • To view all comments, tap the speech bubble icon in the top right of the screen.

  • To view a specific comment, tap on its comment circle on the canvas.

While viewing comments, you can:

  • Leave a new comment.

  • Reply to previous comments.

  • Edit or delete your comments.

  • Tag collaborators in a comment by typing @, then tapping their name.

React, follow, celebrate

  • To react to someone's mural, tap the smiley face icon at the bottom of the screen. You can react with party popper, heart, or thumbs-up emojis.

  • Tap your avatar at the bottom of the screen to:

    • Ask to be followed by participants.

    • Summon participants to you.

    • Disable other people's reactions.

    • Celebrate with confetti.

    • Adjust cursor options.

Participate in a voting session

A voting session screen is displayed when a mural facilitator calls a vote. Tap Begin voting, then tap on a displayed item to cast your vote.

Note: You can participate in a voting session, but currently cannot start a voting session from a mobile device.

Send a mural to a touchscreen display

In order to send a mural to a touchscreen display, you must first set up the display. See this article on setting up your touchscreen display.

To send a mural to a touchscreen display from an Android phone:

  1. Tap the three-dot menu icon ( ) in the top right of the screen.

  2. Tap Send to touchscreen display.

  3. Type the code shown on the touchscreen display into your phone.

  4. Tap Send.

To send a mural to a touchscreen display from an Android tablet:

  1. Tap the mural title.

  2. Tap Send to touchscreen display.

  3. Type the code shown on the touchscreen display into your phone.

  4. Tap Send.
