You can use the Mural + Zapier integration to automatically send information between Mural and Asana. A popular workflow is to create Asana tasks from new Mural sticky notes, and there are plenty of other workflows to choose from.

Note: If you want to see what else Mural and Zapier can do together, check out Zapier’s Mural integration page.

Prerequisites

To use this integration, you’ll need a:

Note: Mural reviews all integrations built by partners, but for additional support please reach out directly to Zapier.

How the integration works

Zapier lets you create automated workflows without the need for any coding. Zapier’s automations are called Zaps, which you can set up manually or from a pre-built Zap. Each Zap has one app that triggers the workflow and an app where the action takes place.

With the Asana and Zapier automation, you have two general options:

  • A Zap takes input from Asana and turns it into output in Mural: In this case, Asana will be the trigger and Mural will be the action where the data from Asana gets sent automatically.

  • A Zap takes input from Mural and turns it into output in Asana: In this case, Mural will be the trigger and Asana will be the action where the data from Mural gets sent automatically. (This is our focus for this article.)

Create a Zap and use the integration

Mural’s integration with Zapier is already available to everyone with a Mural and Zapier account. To create an automation specifically between Asana and Mural, you’ll make a new Zap with a trigger and an action.

For now, let’s set up a Zap that creates tasks in Asana each time a sticky note is added to your mural.

To create a Zap:

  1. From your Zapier dashboard, click Create Zap.

  2. Type a name for your Zap in the top left of the screen.

  3. Press Enter or Return.

Set up the Mural trigger in Zapier

It's time to set up the trigger for your new Zap. Each Zap has one app that triggers the workflow and an app where the action takes place. So, the trigger is where you'll set up the connection with Mural, since new sticky notes trigger the Zap.

Here's what you'll do to set up your new Zap's trigger:

  • Set up trigger app and event.

  • Connect your Mural account.

  • Set up and test trigger.

To set up your Zap's trigger:

  1. In the App & event section of your trigger, select Mural as the App.

  2. Select New Sticky as your Event.

  3. Click Continue to complete the App & event section of your trigger.

  4. In the Account section of your trigger, select your Mural account.

If you haven't connected to Mural through Zapier yet, complete the prompted steps to give Zapier access to your Mural account.

  5. Click Continue to complete the Account section of your trigger.

  6. In the Trigger section of your Zap trigger, select the Workspace, Room, and mural where you’ll add sticky notes.

  7. Click Continue to complete the Trigger section of your trigger.

  8. Click Test trigger.

Upon a successful test, you'll see a message that says, "We found a sticky!"

  9. Click Continue to complete the Test section of your trigger.

When you test the trigger, Zapier tries to find the newest sticky note in the mural you specified. The test confirms that the right Mural account is connected and that your trigger behaves as expected. After a successful test, you’ll move on to set up your Zap's action.

Set up the Asana action in Zapier

An action is an event a Zap performs after it's been triggered. The action in this case is that you want Asana to create tasks in your project (action) directly from sticky notes in your mural (trigger).

Here's what you'll do to set up your new Zap's action:

  • Set up action app and event.

  • Connect your Asana account.

  • Set up and test action.

To set up your Zap's action:

  1. In the App & event section of your Zap's action, select Asana as the App.

  2. Select Create Task as the Event.

  3. Click Continue to complete the App & event section of your action.

  4. In the Account section of your Zap's action, select your Asana account.

If you haven't connected to Asana through Zapier yet, complete the prompted steps to give Zapier access to your Asana account.

  5. Click Continue to complete the Account section of your action.

  6. In the Action section of the action, select the Workspace / Organization, Project, and Section where you want the new tasks created.

  7. (Optional) In the Action section of the action, customize the setup of the fields in your new tasks.

Note: If your Asana project requires certain fields in order to create a task, you must include those fields in the setup of the Zap action.

  8. Click Continue to complete the Action section of the action.

  9. Click Test action.

Upon a successful test, you'll see a message that says, "We found a sticky!"

  10. Click Continue to complete the Test section of your action.

Zapier will let you know that your test was successful. Go check out your Asana project, and you should see the test task sent directly from your new Zap!

To officially start using your Zap, you must click the Publish Zap button. From there, you can choose to have Zapier transfer existing data from your mural or to start the integration from this point forward.

If you ever want to change this Mural to Asana Zap, just go to your Zapier dashboard, open your Zap, and make your updates.
