When you log into Mural, you land on your Mural dashboard’s Home view. This article covers the basics of using your dashboard (such as what each button and menu option does).

Difference between the dashboard and a mural canvas

There are two primary screens you’ll hang out in while navigating Mural: your dashboard and a mural canvas. Aside from a few menu options that live in both the dashboard and the canvas, the experience and purpose of the screens are different.

Note: This article covers dashboard navigation. If you’re ready to hop inside of a mural and work on the canvas, check out our Introduction to canvas navigation article.

Here’s a sneak peek of how a dashboard view and canvas view look side-by-side:

Mural canvas

Now, let’s take a look at the dashboard’s left sidebar menu.

Dashboard’s left sidebar menu

When we refer to the “left sidebar menu” in our support articles, we’re talking about the section on the left side of your Home dashboard view:

Let’s walk through each section of the left sidebar menu.

Sidebar section

Description

New mural button (A)

Click this button when you’re ready to create your first mural. You can start a new mural with a blank canvas or use one of our pre-made templates.

Dashboard view options (B)

  • Home - brings you back to your Home view.

  • Recent - brings you to a view showing your recently opened murals and recently used templates.

  • Starred - brings you to a view with your starred (favorited) murals and templates.

These views are cross-workspace. So, the murals and templates that show up in these views will be from any workspaces you're a part of.

Workspace dropdown menu (C)

Shows the name of the workspace you're currently in. Click this dropdown to view or switch to other workspaces you’re a part of.

If you’re a workspace admin, you’ll also see the following options:

  • Invite people to the workspace.

  • View workspaces.

  • Manage [workspace name].

Shortcuts (D)

  • Murals - takes you to a view with:

    • Recently opened murals.

    • Favorite murals.

    • Recently modified murals in your workspace.

  • Rooms - if your workspace has rooms enabled, this link takes you to a page dedicated to rooms. (Rooms are a way to organize murals in a workspace.)

  • Templates - opens our library of pre-made templates for various use cases.

Dashboard’s top menu bar

When we refer to the “top menu bar” of the dashboard, we’re talking about the menu options at the top of your Home dashboard view. Note that the top menu bar looks different when you enter an individual mural. You can learn more about navigating inside of a mural in our Introduction to canvas navigation article.

Note: The top menu bar varies a little depending on which section of the left sidebar you’ve opened. The basic premise is still the same, though.

Let’s walk through the different parts of the dashboard’s top menu:

Top menu section

Description

Search field (A)

Enter search terms to find specific murals, templates, or rooms. Search results are cross-workspace by default, so the results are from all workspaces you're a part of.

Note: If confidential or private rooms are enabled in your workspace, you will only see those rooms in search results if you’ve been specifically invited to them.

Resources (B)

  • Learning - shows you our in-app Learning, which has short videos to help you become a Mural expert.

  • Community - redirects you to community.mural.co to get support from other Mural collaborators.

Help menu (C)

Opens a dropdown with the following Help options:

  • Chat with Customer Support - opens a chat bot modal.

  • Go to the Help Center - directs you to https://support.mural.co/.

  • Watch intro video - plays a video with a quick overview of the what, why, and how of collaborating in Mural.

  • See what’s new - shows you the Product updates page at https://updates.mural.co/.

Avatar and user options (D)

Click your avatar at any time to open the user options. User options include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Profile settings - change your profile image, name, email address, and more.

  • Notification preferences - update how you want to receive notifications from the Mural app.

  • Sign out - log out of your account.

Dashboard’s mural tiles

From your Home view, you’ll see snapshots of recently opened murals, recommended murals, and more. These snapshot previews are inside of what we call a mural tile (or, if you're on a template page, you'll see template tiles). A mural tile shows:

  • The title of the mural.

  • The avatar of the collaborator who most recently changed the mural. - Click the avatar to view that person's profile page.

  • When it was last modified.

  • The name of the workspace the mural belongs to.

Click the three-dot icon to open a mural tile's menu. Depending on your workspace’s permissions, you’ll see some or all of these menu options for that mural:

  • Add to Starred - mark the mural as a favorite for easy access later.

  • Share.

  • Duplicate.

  • Move.

  • Archive.

  • Rename.

  • Delete.
