When you log into MURAL, you land on your MURAL dashboard’s Home view. This article covers the basics of using your dashboard (such as what each button and menu option does).

Note: The screenshots and placement of menu options were accurate at the time of publishing this article. As the MURAL app evolves, so too may the location of its menu options!


Difference between the dashboard and a mural canvas

There are two primary screens you’ll hang out in while navigating MURAL: your dashboard and a mural canvas. Aside from a few menu options that live in both the dashboard and the canvas, the experience and purpose of the screens are different.

Mural canvas

Now, let’s take a look at the dashboard’s left sidebar menu.

When we refer to the “left sidebar menu” in our support articles, we’re talking about the section on the left side of your Home view:

Note: This screenshot shows Private rooms and Confidential rooms. Private rooms aren’t available on the Free plan, and Confidential rooms are only available to Enterprise plans.

Let’s walk through each section of the left sidebar menu.

Sidebar section


Workspace dropdown menu (A)

Click this dropdown to view or switch to other workspaces you’re a part of.

If you’re a workspace admin, you’ll also see the following options:

  • Invite people to the workspace.

  • Workspace members.

  • Manage [workspace name].

Create mural button (B)

Click this button when you’re ready to create your first mural. You can start a new mural with a blank canvas or use one of our pre-made templates.

Dashboard view options (C)

  • Home - brings you back to your Home view.

  • Murals - takes you to a view with:

    • Recently opened murals.

    • Favorite murals.

    • Recently modified murals in your workspace.

  • Templates - opens our library of pre-made templates for various of use cases.

  • Learning - shows you our in-app Learning, which has short videos to help you become a MURAL expert.

Rooms (D)

If your workspace has rooms enabled, you’ll see those here. (Rooms are a way to organize murals in a workspace.)

Click the title of a room to open it and view the murals saved in that room.

Avatar and user options (E)

Click your avatar at any time to open the user options. User options include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Profile settings - change your profile image, name, email address, and more.

  • Integrations - explore and connect to apps that integrate with MURAL.

  • Notifications - update how you want to receive notifications from the MURAL app.

  • Sign out - log out of your account.

Dashboard’s top menu bar

When we refer to the “top menu bar” of the dashboard, we’re talking about the menu options at the top of your MURAL Home view. Note that the top menu bar looks different when you enter a mural. You can learn more about navigating inside of a mural in our Introduction to canvas navigation article.

Note: The top menu bar varies a little depending on which section of the left sidebar you’ve opened. The basic premise is still the same, though.

Let’s walk through the different parts of the dashboard’s top menu:

Top menu section


Page title (A)

This is the header of the page you’re on. It says Home when you’re on your Home view, Learning when you click the Learning tab, and so on. When you open a room, the page title will reflect that room’s name.

Invite button (B)

Opens the Invite to workspace modal. If invite permissions are enabled for you, you can use this modal to invite people to the workspace via email address or by copying and pasting an invite link.

Note: If you’ve opened a specific room from the left sidebar, this Invite button will say Share instead. Clicking the Share button will let you invite people to that room instead of the entire workspace.

Search button (C)

Opens the search bar where you can search for specific murals or rooms.

Note: If confidential or private rooms are enabled in your workspace, you will only see those rooms in search results if you’ve been specifically invited to them.

Help menu (D)

Opens a dropdown with the following Help options:

  • Chat with Customer Support - opens a chat bot modal.

  • Go to the Help Center - directs you to https://support.mural.co/.

  • Watch intro video - plays a video with a quick overview of the what, why, and how of collaborating in MURAL.

  • See what’s new - shows you the Product updates page at https://updates.mural.co/.

Dashboard’s mural tiles

From your Home view, you’ll see snapshots of recently opened murals, recommended murals, and more. These snapshot previews are inside of what we call a mural tile.

Let’s take a look at what you can do from a mural tile.

Favorite (A)

Click this star to add a mural to (or remove a mural from) your Favorites. If the star is filled in, that mural is marked as a Favorite.

Private or confidential room (B)

If you own or have been invited to a private or confidential workspace, you’ll see a tag with the room type and a padlock icon.

Note: Private rooms aren’t available on the Free plan, and confidential rooms are only available for Enterprise customers.

Mural tile dropdown menu (C)

Depending on your workspace’s permissions, you’ll see some or all of these menu options for that mural:

  • Share.

  • Duplicate.

  • Move.

  • Archive.

  • Rename.

  • Delete.

Details of the mural (D)

Shows the avatar of the collaborator who most recently (opened or changed?) the mural. Also has the title of the mural and when it was last modified.

More information (E)

Clicking this icon shows more detailed information about the mural, such as when the mural was first created and who created it.
