With MURAL’s integration with Google Workspace, you can insert a mural in Google Docs and Slides through the Add-ons tool. Then, a snapshot of your mural appears in the Docs or Slides and links to that mural.

How does the Google Docs and Slides integration work?

With this integration, you can insert a resizable image of your mural into any Google Doc or Google Slide. When someone viewing your Google Doc or Slide clicks the mural preview, a direct link opens that mural in a new window.

Prerequisites to use the Google Docs and Slides integration

You must have a MURAL account and a Google Workspace account to use this integration. The two accounts don't have to belong to the same email address..

If you’re an Enterprise customer, the Enterprise admin will need to enable this integration from the company dashboard.

Set up the Google Docs and Slides integration

First, you must have an active MURAL account and Google Workspaces account. There are two ways to integrate MURAL with your Google Docs or Slides app. You can install the integration directly from the Google Marketplace or from the Add-on drop-down inside Google Docs or Slides.

  3. Click the thumbnail for the MURAL integration.

  4. Click the Install button.

Troubleshoot the Google Docs and Slides integration

Here are answers to some questions that may pop up when using this integration:

  • Do I need a Google Workspace account to use the integration?

Yes, you need both a Google Workspace account and MURAL account to install and use this integration.

  • Do I need a MURAL account to use the integration?

Yes and no. You need a MURAL account to insert a mural into a Google Doc or Slide. Let’s say you have visitor permissions enabled on your mural. Any participant that clicks the mural link on your Doc or Slide can collaborate on that mural, even if they don’t have a MURAL account. If your mural doesn’t have visitor permissions enabled, participants who click the mural link on your Doc or Slide must authenticate with MURAL to access and collaborate on that mural. (Regardless of your mural’s settings, any participant in Google Docs and Slides can see the snapshot image of your mural.)

  • Do I need to turn on embedding for my mural for it to show up in the Doc or slide?

Nope. The image of your mural will be a preview image, and not an interactive embedded version. So, there’s no need to turn on embedding for your mural!

  • Can Google Workspace users access my mural even if they aren’t MURAL members?

Depends on the visitor settings you’ve set up for your mural. Here’s how it works with visitor permissions enabled: If participants click the link to your mural, they can access your mural. MURAL members will show up to the mural canvas with their actual names by their avatar. Visitors will have fun visitor names, like “Visiting Panda” or “Visiting Penguin.” If your mural’s visitor permissions are disabled, participants must authenticate with MURAL in order to access and collaborate on your mural.

  • I’m an Enterprise customer and this integration isn’t working for me. Why?

The company admin for your Enterprise plan must enable the integration from the Integrations tab on the company dashboard.

  • What happens if visitor permissions are disabled for my mural?

Any Google Workspace user with access to your Doc or Slide can see the preview image of the mural, regardless of your mural’s permissions. But, if visitor permissions are disabled, only MURAL members can access and collaborate on your mural.

  • I changed the content on my mural, but the image in the Doc and Slide isn’t updated. How can I update the image?

The mural preview image in Google Docs and Slides won’t update automatically. To update the image, you’ll need to delete it and go through the steps to insert the mural again.
