If you are the creator or facilitator of a mural, you can organize your content for easier navigation or presentation with the outline feature. You can add any object or group of objects to an outline. When you join a mural, the outline displays to help collaborators navigate.

To open the outline:

  1. Click on the Outline icon in the upper-right of the mural.

  2. Each time you click on an outline section, you're taken to that specific area, framework, or object inside the mural.

Note: If you aren’t a facilitator and want to be one, reach out to the owner of the mural and ask them to add you. To find a mural owner, click the members icon in the top right of your mural. You’ll see “mural owner” next to one or more names.

When and why to add an outline to your mural

When building something visual like a mural, it’s easy for us (as the creator) to think the workflow of the page is so obvious. But, guess what? The collaborators joining your meeting or working on your mural (most likely) can’t read your mind.

Where should collaborators start? What if they want to find a certain section? Without an outline, they’ll have to scroll around on a cyber scavenger hunt.

Here are some example use cases of when to use the outline feature:

  • You want collaborators to follow a specific progression of steps.

  • The mural is large with multiple areas.

  • The areas are organized by date, by team, or by person.

Here’s a general rule of thumb: if you’re leading a meeting or workshop and walking people through your mural, use the outline feature. Not only does the outline help your collaborators, it also can help keep you organized and on track.

A bit about areas, frameworks, and grouping objects

The outline feature is available to you if you’re an owner or facilitator of a mural. (If you created the mural, you’re automatically considered a facilitator. This essentially means you have full editing and presentation access to the mural.)

To create an outline easily and efficiently, it’ll help to know about areas, frameworks, and grouping objects. These skills will help you guide your facilitators to the exact section of content you want. If you’re already familiar with these concepts, hop to the next section.

Way to organize

Areas act as smart frames for your content. You can create as many areas as you want, grouping any objects you want.

Note: If you select multiple objects and add them to your outline, MURAL automatically turns that object group into an area.

Frameworks are predefined, special areas, with lots of content already inside them.

Grouping objects

You can group individual objects together so that you can move them all at the same time.

Organize content in an outline

The first steps to working with an outline are learning how to add, edit, and remove content. Oftentimes, people add areas, frameworks, or groups of objects to the outline. But you can add anything to an outline. Just remember that when a collaborator clicks the outline step, their mural automatically zooms in on the associated object(s).

Add content to the outline

Now it’s time to create your outline! The outline steps will show up on your mural in sequential order (1, 2, 3) based on the order in which you add content to the outline. If you want the steps in a different order, just click + drag to reorder the steps.

To add content to the outline:

  1. Select an object (this can include areas or frameworks) or a group of objects you'd like to add to the outline.

To add a group of objects, Shift + click + drag along the desired objects. Or, Shift + click each object.

  2. Right-click on the selection and select Add to outline. This will automatically organize your content into an area.

  3. Enter a title for your outline step.

  4. (Optional) Click the sideways ellipsis (⋮) next to your new outline step and select Add instructions.

You can add instructions now or come back to them later. You can also embed a YouTube video into your instructions.

Note: If you delete the object or area of objects, you will remove the corresponding section from the outline.

Add an indented step to the outline

You can add extra organization to your outline by indenting steps. All you have to do is add an area inside of an area and add them both to the outline.

Here’s an example of how indented outline steps look:

To create an indent in the outline:

  1. From the left-hand toolbar, click the Frameworks button.

  2. Add a Free form area to the canvas.

  3. Right-click the area and select Add to outline.

  4. Add a second area within that area.

  5. Right-click the second area and select Add to outline.

These steps will appear with an indent in the outline!

Edit or remove outline content

As your mural evolves, so too will your outline. Each outline step has a menu (⋮) icon to the right of the step. When you click the menu icon, you’ll see the following options:

Menu option

Makes the title field of an outline step editable.

Add instructions (or Edit instructions)

Opens the Edit instructions modal where you can add and update instructions or notes for each outline step.

You can also embed a YouTube video.

Link to this Step

Creates a unique URL to this specific outline step in this mural. Sharing this link allows collaborators to join your mural and jump to that specific step in the outline.

Note: Make sure to copy the URL to your clipboard.

Remove from the Outline

Removes the step and any corresponding instructions from the outline.

Note: If you don’t see this menu button, you’re likely not a facilitator of the mural or possibly aren’t logged in.

Hide and reveal outline steps

Participants often look ahead during workshops or meetings and can get distracted by other content on the canvas. As a facilitator, you can hide and reveal items in the outline. This gives you more control over what participants can and can't access.

To hide and reveal steps in the outline:

  1. Click the Outline icon in the upper-right of the mural.

  2. Hover over the step you want to hide.

  3. An eye icon will appear over the step in the outline. Click the Hide (eye) icon to hide this step from participants.

  4. To reveal, click the Reveal (eye with a slash) icon and the step will appear again.

Add outline instructions

Outline instructions make it easier for facilitators to explain sections of a mural. This in turn makes live sessions simpler to follow, and allows asynchronous participants to be more self-sufficient.

To add instructions to the outline:

  1. Click the Outline icon in the upper-right of the mural.

  2. Click the menu (⋮) icon to the right of the step.

  3. Select Add instructions.

  4. Type the instructions and click Save.

Add a YouTube video link to the instructions

Instead of needing to write lengthy directions in sticky notes, text, and comments, you’ll be able to easily pass on context and instructions in a mural asynchronously by adding YouTube videos to the outline. Get on the same page with your team without the need to be together at the same time.

This feature is a great way to provide detailed instructions or pre-work ahead of a workshop. Also, you can teach collaborators how to engage in activities or methods in your mural.

To add a YouTube video link to your outline instructions:

  1. Click the Outline icon in the upper-right of the mural.

  2. Click the menu (⋮) icon to the right of the step.

  3. Select Add instructions or Edit instructions.

  4. Paste the YouTube URL directly into the Instructions field of the Edit instructions modal.

  5. Click Save.

To play the YouTube video, collaborators just need to click the video thumbnail in the outline, then click the Play button! While the video is playing, your collaborators can engage with the content in the mural, as well as move the video around the mural.

Note: You can add additional video platform links to the outline, but you can only embed YouTube videos at this time.

Present your content with the outline

No need to launch that old, unwieldy presentation app when you can present your content directly from a mural! With this feature, wow your audience with seamless presentations.

To present your content:

  1. Click the Outline icon in the upper-right of the mural.

  2. Click the Presentation mode icon at the top of the outline.

  3. Navigate through the presentation with the < and > buttons at the bottom of the modal.

  4. Select whether you want to Enter Fullscreen, use the Laser, Celebrate! (with confetti), or display the Outline while in Presentation Mode.

Presentation Mode enables you to navigate around areas just like a slideshow. Feel professional and in control of your content!

Note: When you access the outline during a presentation, anyone following you can see the same steps shown in the outline (they see what you’re seeing).
